It’s tempting to fill up your suitcase during your Bali vacay with the most gorgeous interior accessories and island treasures. But once home, how do you style them within your interior? blog bali bliss margo van vugtHow did you become an interior designer and what did you study in order to become one?

“I’ve been very creative from an early age. As a child, I always enjoyed making, cutting, pasting and painting things. As I got older, I loved ‘pimping‘ things such as book covers, boxes and paintings. And especially in a way so that it all would fit together nicely; ugly covered books on a bookshelf, and for the books not to match at all, that just isn’t an option in my opinion! I wanted to be a window dresser at primary school and this line of job comes very close to being an interior designer. Combining and styling things together! After high school I went to study at Sint Lucas in Boxtel; this was really my dream! I ended up studying interior design here.”

Why did you decide to also teach?

“After studying interior design, I soon discovered that I am a very social type; people also always asked me ‘are you a teacher or something?’. This question made me contemplate if this would be something I would be interested in doing. After my studies I started a teacher training study for Visual Arts and Design. I think it is wonderful to help others and to pass on my knowledge that I have onto others. The social side of the profession also appeals to me, even though it’s not always that easy. Before I had finished my studies I had found myself a job at an MBO school (Secondary Vocational Education), in the Interior Consultancy studies department, where I still work and which I enjoy to this day. I am also a student career counselor for the 1st grade and mainly teach the 1st and 2nd grade.  I’m currently teaching the subject Design and Materials. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping the students and the fun we have during the lessons. Like I said, it’s not always easy but that doesn’t outweigh the fun moments! ”

Have you been to Bali and how did you experience this?

“I have been to Bali twice now. The first time I came to Bali, I really fell in love with the culture and the people. We met a very nice taxi driver whom we are still in occasional contact with. I have seen almost all of Bali. But the most special visit to Bali was when we were in Bali for the second time and were invited by our Balinese taxi driver. He picked us up from the airport and insisted that we visit his family during the special Balinese holiday ‘Kuningan’. He picked us up at our hotel on this day and then drove to his village, far beyond all tourist crowds, there was no tourist in this village at all! I borrowed a beautiful Balinese outfit from his wife and met his whole family; grandma, grandpa, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters. Afterwards we had the honor to be part of the ceremony in their family temple and we participated in a kind of procession that goes through the whole village. As the only white person in that parade, you are of course an attraction! After the parade, his wife had cooked a delicious feast and we explored the village on the scooter: it was fantastic! What I admire most about Bali is the goodness of the people. We can sometimes learn a little more from Balinese people about doing good, especially in our Western culture.”

How would you describe the ‘Bali style’?

‘The ‘Bali Style’.. well there is so much. But the basis is, I think, the natural materials such as sea grass, plants, wood, shells and feathers. All these materials can be combined with light and natural earth tones.”

What is your interior style?

“My style is a mix of the Bali style and a touch of ‘hotel chic’. The Bali style is reflected in the natural materials, plants, Bali home accessories and colors. The hotel chic style is mainly reflected in the golden and black elements in our home.”

What is your favorite item at home?

“I have a lot of favorite items; those are mainly the items that I bought in Bali. I am a real fan of home accessories and I keep moving them around and combining them with other items. With accessories you can really create an atmosphere at home. I also like to make home accessories myself, I make round feather decorations with shells. In addition, I give things from the thrift store a new life. “

What was the biggest challenge in your house?

“Pff… that was the disappointment we got when we were told by our contractor that the space in our living room would be staggered because the neighbor did not choose to extend his house. For me as an interior designer, that was a bit of a swallow, because everything must of course be beautiful and has to match. For me, the space staggering really is an eye sore. Especially when you are me and you have already drawn up your entire interior design plan and it suddenly has to change, and what you wanted suddenly can no longer be done! I’m still having doubts about the space staggering, maybe try a different color on the walls or maybe use wallpaper?”

What are you most proud of at home?

“I think it has to be the atmosphere I created. It’s still wonderful to come home and really feeling at home! When it comes to material things, I think the item that is my pride and joy is our eye catcher in the living room: the TV cabinet and the headboard I made with lighting behind the bed. I still get a lot of positive reactions on this via Instagram.”

What is your guilty pleasure interior wise?

“Because interior design is also my profession, I catch myself always wanting something new. In my line of work, I am constantly confronted with beautiful, new and fun things! When one project is finished, my thoughts will go to the next project. For example, the green color in my living room has been up on the walls for only a half year and I already want another color … or maybe even wallpaper? It’s very nice, but also annoying at times; my house is a project in itself and so it is never finished in my eyes.”

What advice can you give to people who want to incorporate items from Bali into their home or just want a tropical vibe?

“The Bali style starts with the Bali accessories. You can combine these with other natural materials. I always like clustering accessories. Find accessories that are in contrast with each other, by shape, color, material and size. I also always like to work with accessories that elongate a room. Some other advice: don’t think too small. All kinds of small knick-knacks and furniture often make your house smaller and messier. Dare to go for a statement piece that may cost a little more, but that also gives you a lot of pleasure. As a last tip: break up the room. Don’t stick all furniture against the walls. Also dare to break the angular space with round elements such as tables, rugs and accessories.”

“Ik ben eigenlijk vanaf jongs af aan al bezig met creativiteit. Als kind vond ik het altijd heerlijk om dingen te maken, knippen, plakken en schilderen. Op latere leeftijd ging dit voornamelijk over tot het ‘pimpen’ (mooi maken) van dingen zoals boeken kaften, doosjes en schilderijtjes. En dan vooral op een manier zodat het allemaal mooi bij elkaar pastte, want lelijke boeken op een boekenplank die totaal niet met elkaar matchen, dat kan natuurlijk niet! Op de basisschool wilde ik al etaleur worden en dit komt natuurlijk ook in de buurt van interieurontwerper. Het combineren en stylen van dingen bij elkaar! Na de middelbare school ben ik aan het Sint Lucas gaan studeren in Boxtel;
